Microchipping

Microchipping your dog or cat is now required by law for specific circumstances:
1. if your cat or dog is between 8 and 12 weeks of age
2. if a cat or dog is being sold or given away
3. if your dog is a declared regulated dog

SDVC recommends getting all pets microchipped to increase the chances of getting your lost pet back quickly. The microchip will last for the life of your pet, and is a worthwhile investment.

Microchipping is a brief procedure - your veterinarian will implant the microchip between the shoulder blades using a needle.  The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and when scanned supplies a unique number which is maintained at a national microchip registry.  This number is linked to secure information  about the animal, including its owner and owner’s contact details.

It is vital that if you move house or change your contact details, you should update the microchip registry immediately, so they can update your contact details in their records.

The documentation you were given at the time of microchipping will contain the details of the microchip registry to update your details. Alternatively, bring your pet to SDVC where the staff will scan you pet and give you a change of details form.

SDVC provides litter and bulk rates for microchipping of 4 or more pets at the one time. Please contact the clinic on 3288 1574 for details.

Registering with the Council

Microchipping is not the same as registering your pet with the local council. Once registered with the Ipswich City Council, your pet will receive a physical tag that your cat or dog wears on their collar where it is clearly visible. Your cat or dog is listed on the local council’s register, along with your contact details so that it can be returned to you if lost.

Dogs and cats must be registered with the Ipswich City Council area within 14 days of:
          - the dog/cat reaching the age of three (3) months
          - the dog/cat moving into the Ipswich City Council area
          - an owner acquiring a new dog/cat
          - previous registration expiring (not cancelled or revoked)
