Regeneus Joint Therapy
What is Regeneus?
Regeneus is an Australian biotechnology company. In 2008 they introduced a new way to treat osteoarthritis in dogs using stem cells from fat tissue.
How does it work?
Regeneus uses a technology called AdiCell treatment. AdiCell uses your dog’s fat cells to heal an arthritic joint, such as a hip or knee. It is a safe procedure that uses your pet’s natural regeneration system.
Why we use fat cells
•Fat cells are easy to collect.
•Fat cells contain high quantities of mature stem cells – much more than other technologies, e.g. use of bone marrow stem cells
•Fat contains several cell types that help the process of regeneration and include anti-inflammatory properties
What does it involve?
AdiCell is a same day procedure performed at accredited Regeneus Animal Health centres, called AdiCell Treatment Clinics. A pre-check is performed at Springfield District Veterinary Clinic before a thorough work-up at one of the treatment clinics. This work-up includes blood tests, x-rays and CT scans.
The four step procedure.
Step 1. Anaesthetic. Your pet needs to undergo a general anaesthetic for this procedure.
Step 2. A 15-20g sample of fat is taken from your dog’s abdomen in a simple procedure.
Step 3. A Regeneus specialist prepares the AdiCell injection at the Regeneus laboratory. This is a highly specific and specialised procedure but will take less than 2 hours.
Step 4. Each arthritic joint requires one AdiCell injection. The procedure, from anaesthesia to injection, is done on the same day.
How soon before I start seeing results?
The effects of an AdiCell treatment vary in each case. In many dogs treated, improvement is seen within 7 days. This is due to the anti-inflammatory effects of the stem cells injected into arthritic joints. Continued improvement is often seen several months after treatment. Long term effects have not yet been recorded as this is a new type of treatment.
What sort of result should I expect?
After AdiCell, all dogs showed improved mobility in their arthritic joints. The average mobility improvement is 84%. Improvement ranged from 53% better mobility (the worst result), to 100% improvement.
Veterinarians assessed the dogs as showing outstanding improvement at the three month mark as well as excellent improvement at the 6 month mark.
The dog owner satisfaction rate at 3 months is 97%.
Are there any side effects?
As AdiCell uses stem cells from the animal’s own body, there is no risk of tumour development.
