Interesting Surgery this Month
This month our vets Dr Jeannet Kessels and Dr Marilyn Neale performed surgery on a gorgeous little PUG with respiratory obstruction. These dogs can be bred for a short 'pug nose' and this may have unfortunate ramifications for breathing! In this case, the pug was unable to exercise at all and so we performed 3 procedures under general anaesthesia. The soft palate was shortened as this was flapping over the throat, obstructing air flow. The laryngeal saccules, which were swollen and also in the way, were trimmed. Nasal plastic surgery was also performed to allow her to nose breathe. Together with weight loss, this lovely little dog will have a life of fun again. We were very excited to hear that she did not snore upon recovery from anaesthesia and look forward to monitoring her full recovery over the coming weeks.
Winter Aches and Pains
As we come into the cooler months of autumn and winter, the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis becomes more obvious in our pets. Pets do not often cry, but may in fact become quiet or less active with PAIN.
Here are some options to discuss that work which we are most happy to discuss with you!
1. Cartrophen injection weekly for 4 weeks then monthly or 3 monthly . It increases joint health by preventing cartilage degradation, improving joint blood flow and the quality of joint fluid and also has a mild anti-inflammatory effect.
2. Joint Guard aids cartilage repair, and is a great supplement for arthritis.
3. Weight control! Trim pets have much less arthritis and develop arthritis later in life that fat dogs.
4. Eukanuba Senior and similar high quality senior diets are designed to assist in arthritis management, a very easy solution for pain management
5. Stem cell treatment is showing excellent results
If you questions or to seek treatment for dog or cat’s arthritis please call the clinic on 3288 1574 to make an appointment.
Barf Dog Rolls
It is common for dogs to develop Pancreatitis on some brands of dog rolls as they can be very high in fat. They are generally not recommended as are often of a poor quality. This is why we stock BARF, which is a natural dog roll developed by a vet. We have a large freezer full in stock and would love your pet to try this product as an alternative to other dog rolls. It is not an expensive food and can be defrosted daily.
