Canine Blood Donors Required
On sporadic occasions SDVC veterinarians require canine blood for transfusion.
Due to a change in legislation, it is no longer possible for Springfield District Vets to readily purchase blood for transfusion.
Conditions for which blood may be required include; accidental blood loss, ratsac toxicity, hookworm infestation in puppies or autoimmune clotting or haemolytic disorders.
If a member of the community would be prepared to allow their dog to donate blood for the saving of another's pet, this would be tremendously appreciated!
It is essential that the donor is:
- healthy
- large or giant breed (over 25 kg)
- placid temperament
- over 1 year of age
- under 8 years of age
- never been pregnant
- never had a blood or plasma transfusion
